Subject: New York City needs a Bed Bug Task Force
Honorable Council Members and Legislators,
Bed bugs are spreading across our city and afflicting thousands of New Yorkers. Infestations are very difficult and prohibitively expensive to eradicate, creating conditions that threaten the quality of life in our city. There is an urgent need to identify best practices, disseminate bed bug prevention and control information, and coordinate resources to help New Yorkers struggling with intractable and financially draining bed bug infestations.
Other North American cities have created task forces to devise solutions and strategies that include the tracking of infestations, trash collection protocols, bed bug hotlines, coordinated public education efforts and regulatory and enforcement tools to aid prevention and control efforts.
I respectfully urge you to help create a comprehensive bed bug control plan for our city and to hold hearings on introduced legislation in the New York City Council that would establish a bed bug task force, an education program, a bed bug information hotline, and bed bug trash disposal guidelines.
