Subject: Improve Your Coverage of NAFTA
On Saturday March 1, The Grand Rapids Press ran a front-page story on NAFTA headlined "Is NAFTA not so bad for us?" This is a critical story for Michigan and West Michigan considering the amount of jobs that have been lost due to NAFTA, over 50,000 according to the Bureau of Labor and Census Bureau statistics (1).
However, in the story there are four pro-business/pro-NAFTA perspectives and only one that is critical of this trade agreement. All of the sources make claims which are never verified by the reporter. In addition, the story over simplifies the issue by only looking at the issue of jobs. There is no discussion about the environmental impact of NAFTA, how this trade policy has impacted immigration, nor how the job losses have affected communities and families.
We expect more from the only daily newspaper in this community. In the future, please provide more in-depth analysis, seek out other sources, and to make trade policy a priority for news coverage during this election year and in years to come.
